“Love is fate”. It is the statement phrase that sums up LEO & LIN’s FW18 collection.
It is this phrase which encapsulates LEO & LIN’s FW18 collection. What is love and how best to interpret individuality are questions that have intrigued mankind for millennia.
But when it becomes entangled with another nebulous element – fate – love grows even more fascinating: some loves seem guided by fate, while others appear to lead to it. Be it a fairytale happy ending or even a tragedy, this collection explores all the possibilities of love. It is a celebration of female empowerment, as well as a unique opportunity to explore oneself and emerge feeling radiantly elegant, undaunted and positive, which are some of the major constituents of our brand values.
Thus it is that pastel colours such as minty green and soft pink coexist with heavier and more moody tones, such as navy and black. Fabrics ranging from light and durable Tinsel to heavy twill are intertwined, while the use of experimental patent leathers lends a further sophistication as well as an overall sense of seduction. Materials and technique combine to evoke the twin concepts of being in love and the loss of love. On the ornaments and trims side, custom-made butterfly brooches, genuine ostrich feathers, studs and “love is fate” letter embroideries add a contemporary feminine element from our brand values, and infuse a subtle drama that both enhances and elaborates the garments.
While still in the process of creating the collection, another vital inspiration was struck upon – that of Japanese design elements. The idea became to not only regulate the silhouette, but utilise it in ways that remind us love is uniform and boundless, and exists across the whole of humankind. While the concept of “fate” was still being incorporated into the collection, a world-renowned art piece came to the attention of the creative team: The Great Wave by Hokusai. This classic woodblock print depicts three boats off the coastline of Kanagawa, battling an enormous wave under the watchful eye of Mount Fuji – an observational and deeply immersive piece that leads the viewer to wonder exactly might have happened to those boats in the end. It is partly the uncertainty of fate that has maintained people’s longstanding interest in such artworks, and such imagery works perfectly as a metaphor for fate in this collection. Therefore, a more refined, Japanese-orientated design direction is applied onto the overarching oriental concept – custom-made cherry blossoms, Swarovski brooches, dragonfly brooches, and Great Wave inspired embroidered appliqué are some of the highlights of this direction.
LEO & LIN’s FW18 collection is about love, and its counterpart – fate. The goal of celebrating love, whatever form it might take, and of staying positive and strong, resonates deeply with our central brand values.
